NORFOLK OPEN 19TH/20TH JULY 2008 : RESULTS
A huge well done to everyone who fenced in the Norfolk Open and many thanks to Norfolk Fencing Club for arranging it.
The 2008 Norfolk Open saw current and former UEA members out in force in what can only be described as a fantastic weekend.
Saturday 19th July:
Men's Foil: Former President and Men's Team Captain, Michael Fay competed against some extremely tough opponents. In what was only his second open, Michael finished fifty third, going out to the person who would eventually take the silver.
Women's Sabre: Current Secretary and former Women's team Captain Laura Healy finally got her wish of fencing in an Open. Despite all the setbacks and injuries, Laura lost only three out eight of her poule matches and reached the quarter finals. Unfortunately, Laura went out at this stage to the fifty third ranked female sabreur in the country 15-9, who subsequently went on to finish third. Laura finished sixth overall.
Sunday 20th July:
Possibly the best day of the entire Competition!
Men's Sabre: The UEA men's team of last year all decided to enter the sabre and inevitably were drawn against each other in the first poule stage. Michael Fay after winning an exciting 15-14 match reached the last sixteen but unfortunately was defeated at that stage. However, Michael finished fourteenth overall, his proudest moment being beating Graeme Weatherill in the poule stage. Graeme, former treasurer and long serving member of the UEA men's team went on to finish thirteenth, after meeting his all time nemesis, Ian Barkham of Norfolk Fencing Club. However, the biggest cheer was reserved for Matt Sorel-Cameron. Matt had previouly won the Norfolk Open and joined UEA in September, thanks to a lot of bullying from the rest of the men's team, Matt entered the open. Despite a bit of a rocky start, Matt turned it up when it came to the direct eliminations and reached the final. Here he met Steve Pope, a former member of UEA and winner of the Norfolk Open in 2007. By this time an immense crowd had gathered, and watched in awe a man who had been off the circuit for two years go on to win the Norfolk Open, fencing under UEA. Well done Matt!
Men's Epee: Two former members of the UEA men's team entered the Open. Paul Southam did extremely well in what was his first Open for many years, finishing thirteenth! It gets even better. Steve Domek went on to WIN the men's epee!
Women's Epee: Abi Fawkes, a former member of the UEA women's team, finished seventeenth overall. Very well done!
